Uruguay: nationwide deposit system for beverage packaging planned

The national organization for packaging return in Uruguay, Plan Vale, has signed a groundbreaking agreement with the consortium of CIEMSA, CSI and the Reverse Logistics Group (RLG), according to reports. The aim is to implement the first nationwide deposit return system (DRS) for disposable drinks packaging. Uruguay is thus taking on a pioneering role in Latin America and sending a strong signal for a sustainable circular economy.

Under the leadership of Plan Vale, the consortium was entrusted with the development, implementation and operation of the deposit system. The system creates financial incentives for the return of single-use beverage packaging, including PET bottles, aluminum cans, glass bottles and beverage cartons. The broad coverage of materials is intended to maximize the positive environmental impact, it continues.

RLG is working with experienced local companies CIEMSA and CSI to successfully implement this project. This partnership will ensure smooth operations in Uruguay, including the collection and transportation of beverage containers and the construction and operation of counting and sorting centers. RLG will contribute its extensive international experience in the implementation of deposit systems and ensure that the system is implemented efficiently and reliably.

The partnership represents a significant milestone for Uruguay and serves as a model for other Latin American countries considering similar initiatives. In addition to promoting the country's sustainability efforts, the project creates a scalable model for the entire region.
