Leferman, previously General Manager of the Brewers of Romania, has a background in political advocacy and is known for advancing Romania’s large-scale deposit return system, which increased recycling rates through 80,000 collection points. She now aims to leverage her experience to position the brewing sector as a driver of sustainable development and economic growth across Europe.
In her new role, Leferman has highlighted beer’s economic impact and cultural significance, noting its contribution to over two million jobs across 10,000 breweries in Europe. She emphasized that with consumers increasingly valuing sustainability and lower-alcohol options, the industry is evolving in response, aiming to be seen as a leader in responsible innovation.
Earlier this year, The Brewers of Europe released its 2024-2029 Manifesto for a Sustainable Brewing Future, calling for EU support to promote beer as a low-alcohol, nature-sourced product that fosters social integration and sustainable practices. Leferman has expressed commitment to engaging with EU policymakers to ensure these priorities are recognized in forthcoming EU policies. “When enjoyed responsibly, beer complements a balanced adult lifestyle,” Leferman stated. “We are a dynamic and forward-thinking sector and we want the EU to view us as pioneers in responsibility and sustainability. Our industry is at the forefront of innovative packaging solutions, energy-saving practices and contributing positively to Europe’s economy and society.”
