Mexico: The Puebla countryside receives €150 million from the Secretariat of Rural Development

The director of the Secretariat of Rural Development in Puebla confirmed that support has been provided to 21,000 farmers from 145 municipalities whose crops were affected by climate contingencies. Over the last six years, the state institution allocated €150 million to rural development, of which more than €50 million was used to promote the production of mezcal. This subsidy led to the production of 605,000 liters of mezcal.

This additional mezcal production is expected to result in a 20 percent increase in the famous distillate compared to last year. Currently, Puebla boasts 50 mezcal brands selling on both the national and international markets. The most recent market to accept Puebla mezcal is Canada, which maintains high-quality standards for product entry.

In 2023, the state government allocated €25 million to plant 30 million agaves across 100 municipalities in the southern part of the state. The aim is to reach a production of 500,000 liters in the short term and one million liters within five years. According to figures from the Ministry of Rural Development, of the annual sales of 330,000 liters of mezcal, 90,000 liters are exported to the United States, Colombia, and Japan.
